How do you celebrate your birthday? Most people will say that since it is the most important day in the year for me, I like to celebrate it in style with my family and friends, by cutting the cake and having a grand party. But that is not the case with Padam Shree Mr Vikramjit Singh Sahney, as he celebrated his special day this year by highlighting the achievement of those, who have beaten all odds with the help of his organization, the Sun Foundation and are now leading a very successful and satisfied life.
At an annual day event Surya Kiran Beti Bacho Beti Padhao organized in New Delhi, the Sun Foundation highlighted and celebrated the success of persons with disabilities like Tejasvini, who despite having one leg, has the most flexible body and is able to perform the most difficult Yoga exercises, Megna, who though cannot see but is a wonderful singer and is soon going to get launched in Bollywood. She was one of the finalists of famous Television show Indian Idol and Vinod Thakur, who can jump to great heights though he cannot stand.
But rather than just only honouring persons with disabilities, the event was about highlighting various initiatives taken by the foundation to save the women and girl child, to prevent death of girl child in mother’s womb, free education for girls and children, skill development and vocational training, gender equally, saving youth from drug addiction and Swatch India campaign by cleaning slums in Mumbai.
Moreover, the annual day event was not about celebrating the success of old initiatives taken by the Sun Foundation alone but even took up some new ones. While honouring personnel from the armed forces, who lost their lives in the recent Pathankot terrorist attack, the foundation pledged to arrange for the free education of the children of the martyrs so that they can have a successful life. It also adopted widows of farmers, who had recently committed suicide in Punjab.
The chief guest at Surya Kiran Beti Bacho Beti Padhao, Minister for Women And Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi while complementing Sun Foundation for the work it is doing said that the foundation is doing a great job in creating courage among the most disadvantageous sections of the society. While seeking support from the foundation, she said, “A lot of people from my parliament constituency Pilibhit are suffering from the problem of drug addiction. You can surely help me fight this menace.”
Speaking at the occasion, Mr Sahney described Menaka Sanjay Gandhi as a role model for today’s women, who had fought and stood up like a tall rock after loosing her husband when she was only in her early 20s. Summing up Sun Foundation activities, he added, “This charitable foundation was established in 1998, with an objective to empower the underprivileged sections of the society like poor women, children and persons with disabilities and provide them skills. We have managed to reach a large sections of people and helped them to live with dignity.” Talking about the two initiatives, which were the highlights of day’s event, he said, “Whereas their initiative Beti Bacho Beti Padhao aimed at preventing killing of the girl child in mother’s womb and respecting the women, Surya Kiran is an initiative to provide skill to underprivileged sections of the society through its 50 centres of the foundation.”
The foundation aired two short films, one of which featured veteran Bollywood star Dharmendra to inspire people about protecting the girl child.
While on one hand, Surya Kiran Beti Bacho Beti Padhao was an initiative to highlight the talent of children with disabilities, who performed on stage on patriotic songs and to honour all those, who have been ambassadors of Sun Foundation, but on the other hand, it was an occasion to invite all those present to do their little bit to help the society and make this plant a better place to live.
